Week 7 in 540 high school football brought big wins, close calls, and a few shake-ups in the top 10. From dominant blowouts to nail-biting finishes, the rankings continue to take shape as teams fight for playoff positioning and district supremacy
THE TOP TEN
10. Massaponax Panthers (3-3)
At number 10, Massaponax drops two spots after a tough 30-0 loss to #3 North Stafford. The Panthers couldn’t get their signature triple option attack rolling against the Wolverines’ disciplined front, marking their first shutout loss of the year. Sitting at 3-3, they’ll look to regroup and get their offense back on track when they travel to face a talented Stafford team also sitting at 3-3.
9. Culpeper Blue-Devils (4-2)
At number 9, Culpeper breaks into the top 10 for the first time this season after a strong 43-28 win over Chancellor. The Blue Devils are playing with a renewed sense of confidence and balance on both sides of the ball, showcasing steady improvement each week under Coach Sherry. Sitting at 4-2, they’ve got a golden opportunity to keep their momentum rolling when they face a struggling, winless King George squad next.
8. Spotsylvania Knights (4-2)
The Knights let a late lead slip away in a heartbreaker to Courtland, falling 21-19 after being up 19-7 in the fourth quarter. Still, this team has shown grit, growth, and fight under Coach Lunsford, and they’ll get a big opportunity to bounce back when undefeated Caroline comes to town this week.
7. Kettle Run Cougars (5-1)
Kettle Run storms back into the top 10 after a dominant 34-0 shutout over previously unbeaten Handley. The Cougars controlled every phase from their stingy defense forcing turnovers to their efficient offense capitalizing on short fields. This team is quietly rounding into form at the right time and reminding everyone (including me) why they’ve been one of the most consistent programs in the region.
6. Courtland Cougars (5-1)
Courtland continues to prove they’re built for tight, physical football games after pulling off a dramatic 21-19 comeback win over Spotsylvania. The Cougars rallied from a 12 point fourth-quarter deficit behind key plays from QB Chieftan Watson and RB Tyrik Newman, showing poise and resilience when it mattered most. With a strong ground game and a defense that forces timely turnovers, Courtland looks like a serious Battlefield District contender heading into the back half of the season.
5. Caroline Cavaliers (6-0)
Caroline keeps finding ways to win even when it’s not pretty. The Cavaliers gutted out a 6-0 victory over a scrappy Eastern View squad, showing that they can grind just as well as they can light up the scoreboard. Blake Morris’ 36 yard TD strike to Blair Morris was the difference, and the defense pitched a shutout to keep their perfect season alive. This team is resilient, confident, and making history 6-0 for the first time ever.
4. Louisa Lions (6-0)
At number 4, Louisa (6-0) continues to look every bit like a state contender after a dominant 55-14 win over Goochland. The Lions jumped out early and never looked back, with their explosive duo of Savion Hiter and Dyzier Carter once again setting the tone offensively. Louisa’s balance, physicality, and ability to execute at a high level week after week have made them one of the most complete teams in Virginia. They’re rolling through opponents and showing no signs of slowing down.
3. North Stafford Wolverines (5-2)
North Stafford held strong with a 30-0 shutout of Massaponax, showing why they remain one of the top teams in the region. The Wolverines’ defense dominated, completely stifling the Ponax triple option attack that had scored 40 the previous week. Kenaz Sullivan and the backfield provided timely punches, while the defense made key plays that kept the game well in hand. North Stafford now sets its sights on Mountain View for Homecoming, looking to continue their momentum
2. Riverbend Bears (6-0)
At number 2 Riverbend continued its undefeated run with a 40-14 win over Mountain View. Cam Simmons had a standout night, hauling in two early touchdowns to set the tone, while the Bears’ defense completely shut down MV’s offense, which had racked up over 300 yards the previous week. Riverbend’s balanced attack and stifling defense keep them in prime position as they prepare for a huge showdown with #1 Colonial Forge next week.
1. Colonial Forge Eagles (7-0)
At number 1, Colonial Forge (7-0) remains atop the rankings after a 42-15 win over Brooke Point. Brock Brimhall and TaySean Jones connected for two early scores, while Torie Martin and Jaylen Carter added rushing touchdowns, and Brimhall later found Darion Majeed for another TD before a pick-six closed out the scoring. The Eagles’ offense continues to roll, and their defense held strong, keeping Brooke Point from mounting any real threat. Forge now gears up for a massive clash with #2 Riverbend next week in what could be a de facto District Championship game.
