Battlefield District Week 7 Recap
Who is emerging as a favorite in one of the most competitive districts in the state?!?!
----------------------------------------------------------------
#7 Spotsylvania (4-2): 19 at #6 Courtland (5-1): 21
#6 Courtland pulled off one of the most dramatic comebacks of the season, edging #7 Spotsylvania 21-19 after trailing 19-7 late in the fourth quarter. Tyrik Newman opened the scoring for the Cougars, but Spotsy answered with a 72-yard bomb from Braden Hodges to Colton Jones right before halftime. The Knights appeared in full control after Cam Puller punched in two short TDs in the third, giving Spotsy a 19-7 lead in what looked like a statement win for Coach Lunsford’s group. But Courtland’s defense came alive, forcing a key turnover that led to a Watson-to-Ahmari Boxley touchdown with under two minutes left. The Cougars then perfectly executed an onside kick and Newman finished the job, scoring from four yards out with just 19 seconds to play. It was a thrilling rivalry win that showcased Courtland’s toughness and poise under pressure. The Cougars (5-1) now travel to 1-5 Eastern View, while Spotsy (4-2) looks to regroup at home against undefeated #5 Caroline.

----------------------------------------------------------------
James Monroe (4-2): 27 at King George (0-6): 3
James Monroe continued their strong run in the Battlefield District, improving to 4-2 with a convincing 28-3 win over struggling King George. The Yellow Jackets’ defense controlled the tempo from start to finish, frustrating the Foxes and keeping them out of the end zone for the entire game. Meanwhile, it’s been a stunning fall for King George, a program that once dominated the region but now sits at 0-6, searching for any sort of spark. JM’s balanced attack and physical defense have them right in the thick of the Class 3 playoff race, with plenty of confidence heading into next week. The Jackets will look to stack another district win when they host winless Chancellor, while King George faces a tough road test at Culpeper — a team that’s quietly 4-2 and thriving offensively after making school history with their first-ever win over Eastern View earlier this year.
----------------------------------------------------------------
Culpeper (4-2): 43 at Chancellor (0-6): 28
Culpeper kept their momentum rolling with a 43-28 win over Chancellor, improving to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in the Battlefield District. The Blue Devils’ offense continues to impress, showing great balance and explosiveness as they handled their business against the winless Chargers. With just one close district loss (38-33) and a statement win over their longtime nemesis in Week 1, this team has quietly built one of its strongest resumes in years. Sitting at 5-2 is well within reach, and confidence is growing week by week in Culpeper. As for Chancellor, it’s been another tough outing in what’s turning into a long season — they’ll travel to Fredericksburg to take on a hot James Monroe squad looking to stay near the top of the district.
Eastern View (1-5): 0 at #5 Caroline (6-0): 6
This one definitely caught some folks off guard not because of who won, but how it played out. Caroline came in averaging 45 points per game and looked poised to light up the scoreboard again, but Eastern View’s defense, led by standout lineman Hayden Loveless, made the Cavaliers earn every yard. The Cyclones battled hard all night, keeping things tense in a defensive slugfest. Ultimately, Blake Morris’ 36-yard touchdown pass to Blair Morris proved to be the difference, sealing a 6-0 Caroline win and marking the first 6-0 start in program history. Huge credit to Coach Terry Alexander and his group — it wasn’t flashy, but it was gritty, and at the end of the day, a win’s a win.
